Definitely not the most complex rum on the planet, but it was a pleasantly surprising sipping experience. Hints of smoke and wood - not at all like I expected/assumed from aging in Islay whisky casks (of course this is only partial aging, so nicely done to not overdo these sometimes powerful flavor components!). Overall nicely balanced, subtle spice flavors, prominent vanilla, sweet, and smooth with very little burn. A pleasant, simple nose, with only a slightly more complex taste. The small bits add up to a very nice rum.
This was a bit of a novelty buy - smokey flavours are great everywhere else, so why not try rum that way? It was well balanced, my fear was that the smokiness would be too much, but not the case.
At least two friends who tried it immediately after their first sip suggested it was just like a bourbon, so if that is your thing, you are in safe hands.
I do find the flavour a little synthetic when sipping it strait. Put it in a mixer and that is no longer a problem, and this rum shows its true power. Without overpowering it, the robust flavour pushes it through what ever it goes in a glass with. This may become my go-to for mixed drinks.
Pretty damn good for the price. Its not overly smokey like the Zacapa Negro but still manages to be smooth with oak notes and no loss of sweetness. Also you cant beat the price. I recommend it to all those who live in countries who allow imports of cuban goods as opposed to those that boycott them because they nationalized over 60yrs ago leaving the bacardi rum company complaining to this day.
At first, I wasn't that impressed, but as the content depleted, it grew on me.
Charred wood and on the nose, a hint of vinegar too? Sweet smoky wood continues on the flavor, nice burn, quite dry and nutty. Not my favorites, but ok.
This is not really better than Havana Club 7 but it has an entirely different taste profile. While it can indeed be described as "smoky"....l find it is a little thin with a more alcohol aftertaste than Havana Cub 7.....but still decent on the rocks.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Very nice, very smooth. Basically this tastes exactly like the 7 year plus a small hint of peat smoke. It really works well with the sweetness of the rum. Very good sipper.
