This is a 36 year old single cask rum from Panama. Distilled 1983 in the Las Cabras distillery. Aged in a bourbon barrel until 2019. We have a barrel strength of 61% here.
Smell: I notice many dry fruits (raisins and red fruits), wood and dark barrel aromas. The rum has a flowery, aromatic effect. Burned sugar sweetness develops after 20 minutes. Orange zest, intensive bourbon barrel flavors with oak and vanilla follow. Tobacco can also be noticed. Deep in the glass, the rum is earthy and sharp.
By far the best Panamarum so far.
Taste: The rum starts sweet with burnt sugar, dried fruits and grape seeds (bitter). Immediately tannins develop, which bring bitter substances, the rum becomes astringent. It continues with dark barrel flavors heading towards Foursquare. Plums, hazelnuts, tannins and wood, it goes towards the finish.
The spice rises, the mouth is still dry. Hazelnut, tannins and dried fruits with barrel aromas can be found again. From the middle the rum is like a Foursquare.
Aftertaste: hazelnut, dried fruit, dark wood
This is the best Panama rum so far, at the same time it has little of the characteristics of a typical Panama rum. The long storage has gained so much influence that the rum is reminiscent of a Foursquare. It is a little more elegant in smell than in taste. The bitter aromas are a bit too dominant on the palate, it's overaged.
If you are looking for this profile, you can find it cheaper at Foursquare, the Barcelo 30 also has a few similar flavors to offer for a fraction of the price.
