Very nice rum to drink with a mixer on a warm summer afternoon
Haven't had that many different rums so don't take my word for it, but definitely worth the cash. Drinking it straight has been a joy, a very tasty sipper. Cant wait to try the Mount Gay XO next
I give this a solid 7.8 Far better than it is rated here. It is very smooth. Not sweet. Nice caramel, vanilla and smoke notes. Reasonably complex. Nice to sip. Better on ice than near. Nice finish. Nice price. A definite keeper in my liquor cabinet.
I had tried this the first time visiting my son and commented that it was harsh. Six months later on another visit and this time I really liked this rum. I usually prefer to drink most rums on the rocks and I did mix this one but I have to say I am buying a bottle for myself. It is not too sweet and with little afterburn. I recommend giving it a try.
This rum be finished of a bourbon wench. If you're not into bourbon (or wenches), pass on this rum. All the rest of you scallywags, listen up! Like a new crew member, this rum will prove itself in time. It may have a boozy smell about it, but it be smoother than Long John himself. She smells sweeter than she tastes, but the taste is amazing. A little vanilla, a little almond, a little oak, a little smoke... quite the treasure.
In a nutshell; a young and fruity Bajan spiced up with charred oak to give it some spine.
On the nose vanilla, smokey oak, dried fruit (raisins, figs), rotten orange (in a good way) and spices.
On the palate this is almost a spiced rum but without the usual sugar. The orange turns to ginger and the smokey notes carry a long way, a healthy dose of black pepper kicks in and some hints of coffee and/or dark chocolate become stronger near the end. It lingers on quit a bit.
For what it is I cannot rate it higher than a 7 and I have cheaper rums that I gave higher scores but that won't keep me from buying again. It is a very pleasant, well balanced ( the charred oak does not repress the nice fruity flavours) and very easygoing. It never disappoints and the only downside is that I always take one or two glasses more than I planned....
Tonight's Rum, tonight from Camano Island WA: Mount Gay Black Barrel. Barbados is known for a number of fine Rums, Mount Gay is most familiar. On the nose, it's honey, allspice and sugar cane. Straight up it's got a bite. It's a mere shadow of it's older brother Mount Gay 1703 XO Cask Strength. Being aged in charred oak Bourbon it pulls in a slightly smokey and peppery flavor underneath its vanilla texture. On the throat, it's clean and warm but leaves a sharp burn on the pallet. 6 out of 10 and best as a mix unless you're a hardcore Rum drinker.
A nice balanced Bajan nose with a little extra spicy kick to it.
"Sipped the Black Barrel certainly gives some of the oaky notes of a bourbon but also makes the mouth water."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
