This rum is produced out of freshly pressed sugar cane juice, so I would consider it an agricole style rum. The single cask edition exists of various casks, which differ slightly in terms of aging (have seen 9-12 years) and alcoholic degree (about 50%) and bottle output (about 220 bottles per cask, indicating small wooden barrels were used). Unfortunately it is not specified, which type of barrels have been used, official label just says oak, have found sources in the internet indicating French oak or Mareira Wine barrels. Nosing reveals flowers, oak, raisins together with some metallic hint - yes, there are also some of these grassy notes, so typical for Caribbean agricoles, but only at a much lower degree. Palate: the 50% alcoholic degree defines the first impression together with a dry, salty note, but this quickly gives way to sweeter flavors of citrus, banana, honey and something I would describe as pine needles. Finish is long with the notes of the palate, but not in an intensive manner. Overall it is nice to see that the island of Madeira, which played such an important part for sugar cane to find its way to Brasilia and the Caribbean produces such interesting and good quality rums today.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I tried a few rums at the Engenhos destillery. The young 970 6y was what you would expect of a young rum. Older rums as a 20y+ rum which I cannot find online and the Single Cask Edition 970 were unfortunately not that enjoyable. This rum has a high alcohol content and does not deliver anything memorable, so it's rather a disappointing experience, especially when considering its price.
