Add it to mai tais, add it to tiki drinks, add it to classic rum cocktails, add it to everything but be warned, it is funky! I use this in moderation; a half ounce will give any rum cocktail an awesome kick. I totally get the split reviews, this is definitely not for everyone. I would love to try a non-overproof version of J Wray for comparison, but I haven't gotten my hands on one yet. (Obviously not a sipping rum, I don't think that needs to be said.)
The unaged wilderness from Jamaica. Rum Bar, which I already reviewed here, didn't impress me much, so I was quite curious. It's a 63% blend of rums from Jamaica's New Yarmouth distillery. It's generally intended mainly for rum cocktails.
Bottle: Tall, plain as cheap vodka.
Colour: Clear.
Nose: Compared to the similar Rum Bar, it's more pleasant. It smells like fruit spirit (a mix of apricot and currant). After leaving it to stand, you can also smell sugar cane, unripe banana and currant jam.
Flavour: A fruity brandy with a sweeter taste. The alcoholic strength of 63% is quite pronounced here. Again it is a mix of fruits (bananas, pineapple, plums, sweeter currants and gooseberries). Imagine a sweeter plum brandy mixed with apricot.
Aftertaste: Long.
Conclusion: Compared to a strange smelled Rum Bar, Wray & Nephew Overproof is in a whole different league, which I quite enjoyed. While it's a rum primarily intended for cocktails, it's not bad on its own either.
Rating: 7.5/10
The smell is strong latex, mixed with rotten lemon and burnt rubber. Please do not get me wrong, I like Jamaica funk, I love funky rums, such as Hampden Gold or Meyer's, but this is pretty awful and the experience can be compared only to opening a pack of condoms and actually eating them. The taste starts with a latex and rubber, then comes relatively (expected something much worse) smooth alcohol, with a bit of lemon, the aftertaste is alcoholic burn, not too harsh for 63%, followed again by latex. Tried to mix it, but the rotten-rubbery smell kills the mix. I hope the latex and rubber will subside as the bottle gets half empty, but so far I pushed myself only for three shots (one neat and two with a coke) of this thing over the course of three months.
I used to think this was only good as pure rocket fuel. The older I get and more rums I try, the more I realise just how bloody tasty it is!
Let’s get a few things straight here. This is NOT Jamaican funk. If you want funk go get some Hampden or Smith & Cross. There is no comparison. This has a whisper of funk and happens to be Jamaican. That whisper is wiped out by a pleasant lime and cane flavor. It has plenty of punch as you might expect with an overproof. Some real burn too. Good mixer. Good shooter. Bad sipper. Pussers and Plantation overproof beats this stuff down completely. No contest. Malecon is so much better you would pour the Wray & Nephew down the drain with a huge smile. Try the 3 above for yourself and thank me later.
First off, I can safely say that the negative reviews of this are probably based on a bad batch...or perhaps I got the only good bottle but...
It smells way better than I would have thought! It is afterall, basically unaged (which usually makes it less smooth,) light in color (which typically translates to being very dry-not sweet) and overproofed (making it more intense/painful than the average rum.) These three things often point to a mediocre or unpleasant drinking experience for most people. I fully expected a rubbing alcohol scent to waft its way into my nostrils but was pleasantly surprised by how mellow and sweet it smelled! It's slightly more vicious to drink but not very. It's actually really good considering all of the above "issues," which created expectations of drinking boat gas for me. It's sweetness transfers from nose to palate better than I expected too with an acceptable (but not exceeding) amount of burn and bite to it. It's definitely not the sharpest or most intense rum I've had, which, in reality, it probably should be. There's a reason this is a local favorite in Jamaica and I have to believe it isn't just because it's so high proof (126 to be exact.) For being "lighter fluid," it's actually reasonably smooth and quite delicious! At $20 a bottle, it's a steal! Worst case scenario (if you don't like it,) it will be more than capable of cranking your cocktail's octane up a notch without completely ruining your drink. I can honestly say that this is good enough rum to drink on ice (although I wouldn't recommend it,) which is saying a lot! When all is said and done, it leaves me wondering why so many unaged or light or overproofed rums are often times so terrible. This product managed to take all that and still come out the other side with a palatable rum (against all odds, shall we say?) Not only is it good but it smells and tastes like the candy, Whoppers. Whoppers are a candy made of chocolate and malted milk and this rum reminds me of just that...candy, making this product dangerous as hell considering its octane! Appleton Estate (who owns Wray and Nephew) continues to amaze me! It's definitely worth a shot (which might be all you need!) Surprising and highly recommended!
The reviews about the full flavour made me curious. Tot bad it's a flavour i don't like, in general i like overpeoof rums.
Get notable citrus and vegetal/grassy aromas.
"Despite the funk and grassy aromas there is still a fair amount of sweetness on the nose. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Den rum anbefales til cocktail og med soda. Jeg syntes ikke den har så meget funk som Rum-Bar. der er meget smag for pengene.
