seeking opinions on the Rhum J.M lineup
Today I was at Total Wine, and there on the shelf was a single bottle of Rhum J.M 2006 millesime with no price tag. An employee scanned it and it came up as $93.99, which I think is a pretty smokin' deal since the lowest I've seen any of the millesime versions is about $139.99. So I gave it a try and I like it a lot, but I'm not sure that I love it just yet.
My only other Rhum J.M is the terroir volcanique, which is about $40 locally, and I like that one pretty well too, so I've got both ends of the spectrum, ignoring the 15-year version for now.
I'm generally a fan of intensely flavored rums. So far I'd rate the Volcanique as quite tasty, but not really very intense, but a great value at $40. The millesime is more intense, and worth every penny of the $94 I paid for it, but if I have to spring ~$150 for another one its not intense enough compared to some other alternatives in that price range.
There's a few more options in between, so I was wondering if some of you have tried any or all of them and can comment on each one. From what I can see, the following versions are available:
Gold -
VO -
VSOP -
XO -
And to clarify, I'm not using them as cocktail mixers, I'm sipping it neat. Is there one in the lineup that has the most bang for the buck, or are they all incrementally better as the price increases?
dougw,
The Gold and VSOP is extremely pricewhorty Agricole's and I'm sure that the VO is as well.
The XO is in my opinion the best introduction to the Agricole world there is out there.
hi dougw,
yes, they are getting more and more expensive, but also better. Like Stefan, I recommend the XO for drinking straight. The special cask finishes are also delicious
Terroir Volcanique is good, IMO.
