Should we factor price into ratings?
This fantastic website is mainly about rating rums. but I think the vast majority of us, myself incuded, factor in the price of the bottle into our ratings and there's nothing necessarily wrong with it. We all have to pay to drink it and we all know that everyone likes to get value for their money. At the same time though should the price sway our rating of the actual rum itself as the actual point is to rate the rum and share our comments and suggestions. My suggestion would be a two tier rating system. One strictly for the rum and the second strictly based on the cost or value. I think we could get more impartial ratings on the rum itself if there is a two tier system. And I am guilty of it myself for rating a rum lower just based on the $$$. But all in all I love this site. I am so happy I found it. It is a great online community.
Not sure if the price should matter. I believe that the rewiews are universal. Price is a factor that can change in time, the old price-quality ratio is meaningless if the price increases by a factor of 10 or 100 (which is not that uncommon).
I keep my ratings separate from price. Had I included price in my ratings, I would never have bought premium rums like Selvarey Owner's Reserve. I have perfected my own formula to decide upon repeat purchases. Plain and simple, taste counts twice as much as price. How do I quantify taste? By my overall rankings. For example, if a rum ranks 45th out of my 454 ratings, then this one is at the top 10 percent. If it costs $150 US and my limit is the same, then this is at the bottom 100 percent, so (2*10 +100)/3 comes out to 40 percent. Anything less than a final score of 20 percent qualifies it as an excellent purchase for me. It took me years to perfect this formula. Then comes the element of going on wild goose chases to find those rare rums like Foursquare ECS. I simply refuse to buy any more of them.
I don't think the price should have any effect on the chosen grade, but it could be interesting to read if the reviewer thinks that it's pricewhorty or not.
yes i like to write the price so in a few years you can see how much more expensive the rum is ... but the price just in rare cases influences my rating ! and it s interesting when i go and read ratings for very expensive rums like for example the havana union or maximo, if you look well you see some people give bad ratings because they are all overpriced, i think this is realistic !
Out of the expensive rums costing $60 US or more, only 7 rated as excellent buys and 25 rated as good buys. The first group went all the way up to $83 US and the second group went all the way up to $150 US. So many of the pricey rums wound up just being good buys instead of excellent buys. Fifty rums wound up in my top 11 percent of my rankings, with 40 percent of those costing me $60 to $150 US each.
On the flip side for the expensive rums that I tried, 7 rated as average buys and 11 rated as terrible buys.
I think that it is much more of a challenge to find very good rums in the $20 to $30 US price range than risking big bucks on ones costing more than $60 US. I also believe that many of the high ratings on the expensive rums are from those who refuse to admit that they got ripped off. I was never afraid to tell everyone on here when I got ripped off by an expensive rum.
I factor price into my ratings, but it is at most 1 star impact.
