Appleton 21yr new vs old
Hi, could anyone offer their opinion on the old versus new appleton estate 21yr? I have an opportunity to purchase the old stock and curious as to peoples thoughts..
Picture attached
Appleton produces high quantities of this (in comparison to other destilleries) and they have a lot of experience with this product. So i assume the newer bottlings will be in comparable quality or better. However if you collect/invest, the old version is harder to find and therefore costs more. In this case i would prefer the old version for the same price.
I can safely say that the new 21 is fantastic, however, I can't say that I experienced the older version...BUT...I have drank several "old" Appleton products and can easily say that all of their "newer versions" have been better. Long story short, Appleton's products seem to improve with age (figuratively and literally,) which means very plainly that the new is likely greater than the old. In such a case, the real question becomes not if it's going to be better but would you like to know how it has improved? Your situation is a rare one that most people don't get normally. The old is usually gone and replaced by the new but you can actually do the Pepsi challenge with these products, which is a very unique situation. Personally, I would have already bought the bottle but that's me. Bottom line, if you are a fan of rum in general, you are likely to be semi-disappointed (depending on the cost) but if you are an Appleton fan, you won't regret the purchase. I hope that helps.
I have not tried the newer stock of the 21. I have often found Appleton to have a distinctive and unappealing after taste, even with the 21. However in recent purchases, I haven't noticed the after taste nearly as much. I am not sure if that is a function of me getting used to it or if they have changed their blending approach.
