If you are new to rum, check out capn Jimbos beginner guide. The five chapters are worth reading, very entertaining and interesting. http://rumproject.com/menuitem1.html He answers the basic questions about tasting, reference standards, nosing glasses and basic starter collection.

Thanks vomi1011: This is interesting reading even for experienced rum drinkers like me. I especially liked the chapter on glasses. However, I can sum up most of what Captain Jimbo wrote in just four words, "Drink what you like". The in depth analysis of these articles will more than likely blow most of the minds of the new rum drinkers. Therefore, I propose my very simple approach! Stick with rums costing between $20 US and $50 US for starters. With these reviews as a guidance, you should wind up with an 80% chance that you will rate your new rum as 6 or higher. That is not bad at all for starters!
