Does anybody know what's the difference besides the % of alcohol?

They refreshed their product line, good decision: https://thebarhopper.net/2020/05/06/foursquare-distillery-ups-abv-as-part-of-new-line-up-of-rums-coming-to-uk/ "When it came to the XO, The Floating Rum Shack found that “the increased ABV, even if it’s just 3%, brings more spice and sharpens up the mouthfeel, with the tannins more pronounced. Seemingly more oily on the palate. Generally as approachable but more grown-up.” With the Doorly’s 12 Year Old, “the extra 3% has sharpened up the delivery [leading to] more grip, more dried fruit”. Commenting on the increased ABVs, Seale said: “43% is the standard in Barbados. When we first came to the UK, to compete we reduced it to 40%. That was a mistake that has now been corrected.”

I found the 12yo increasing from 40% > 43% added a bit of zing to thing. I think 43-46% is ideal for many rums.

At 40% all Doorlys were not very intensive. My XO bottle is empty for some weeks and I have not planned to buy a new one. But with 43% I would give it a try. Yes, 46% would be great for all rums. I mean, there is no need to discuss weak flavors that someone might perceive. If you get a slap in the face with a pineapple, it is pretty clear to everyone what we are talking about.

Interesting point! I just checked the last of my Doorly's XO bottles that was bought at the end of June. It states 40% ABV. Therefore, I should hoard it until the replacements arrive in a few weeks so that I can do side by side tastings and add an addendum to my existing review. Thanks for the tip!

Currently having a R.L Seale's 10yo. It has a sticker over the label stating "Export Proof 46% Alc/vol". Beneath that on the original, is the strength at 43%/86 Proof. Maybe different markets get different strengths.

RL Seals 10y was updated in 2018. I think the 43% bottles are seldom meanwhile. http://thefatrumpirate.com/r-l-seales-finest-barbados-rum-export-proof-46
