#! Are there rums simlilar to Barbancourt 5 Star , and Old Man Guavaberry Republic 5 yr( or 8) at lower cost. #2. I once liked Mount Gay, but it now is unpleasantly sweet. Is it Mount Gay or my taste that has changed? Is their Black any better? Thanks. i

I know that it is all personal, but for cheap rums, I can think of 2. Of course this rather depends on a) what you call cheap, b) your personal taste and c) what duty/tax rates your country has For me, 2 stand out. Doorly's 5yo Chairman's Reserve Not like Barbancourt, as that is a rum agricole, but for value I think that they are great. As for Mount Gay. When I was young and silly, I was going through 3 or 4 bottles of the Eclipse a week. I now think it a fairly average rum. The Black Barrel was just seemingly a marketing exercise and style over substance. I quite like the Extra Old, but prefer other rums at that price point. Not had their others. So Mt Gay is something I rarely drink these days. Owned by Remy, I always think that they are more interested in profit than any artisanal products

Andy I have noticed recently that comments from the “Discuss” section of this website has been doubling up in the “Stream” section. Is this a quirk to be resolved in the near future or is it now designed to show up on both sections? Personally I would prefer keeping the two separate. Just my two cents worth.

I'm a newbie so take what I say with a grain of salt, but Mt. Gay Black Barrel is my go to mixer. According to some other sites that I've read it has no added sugar and certainly tastes that way to me as compared to some other rums that I've tried.

Ed where are u located? Go on their website and see if there is a "Total Wine and More" store near you. My go to rums from them are Doorly's 8 or 12 yr for $25. at the highest. Barbancourt is really a unique rum but you may like Kirk & Sweeney 12 yr rum as it has some Agricole-like qualities and is $30. Other cheap go-to rums for me are DonQ Anejo (drier option) and El Dorado 8 yr (sweeter Demerara style option) both usually under $25. Good luck!

Bob, Doorly's 12yo @ $25!! What are your tax rates, as in UK the price is a lot higher? Here we pay GBP 28.74 per litre of alcohol and then 20% VAT on the whole lot (rum and Duty). So a 70cl @ 40%, the Duty (inc VAT) is GBP9.66 (about $13.30). Or working backwards.....a $25 is say £18. Take off the VAT = £15. Take off the Duty, to leave the cost of the rum free of all taxes = £6.95. As you are in US, you will have 75cl bottles, so the cost of the rum would be £6.38

Hey Charles I don't know the details I would have to look into it. I will say that TW and More is the ONLY place i have ever seen the Doorly's brand EVER. Rum in general here isn't popular like it is in the UK and you usually only find crappy white Bacardi or Captain Morgan in most places. That specific retailer has something they call their "Spirits Direct" program and they also do a "Winery Direct". Not all brands are included in these programs that make them so affordable. I'm going to read up on it more, for now all I know is I'm damn lucky to know it exists.

Bob, Richard Seale has an exclusive distribution agreement with TW for certain brands produced by Foursquare - Doorly's and Seale's. Not sure about his other brands - I know Real McCoy is available widely. I got some Cane Mill and Old brigand at TW when I was on vacation but don't know about exclusivity.

Flor de cana is a really good aged rum and its cheap. TW have a lot of differents good rums not only Bacrdi or captain Morgan. but good rums are expensive as everything else. Flor de cana its really good pricey, don't know if you can get it in UK.

I had so many rums in my collection that I had to create a spreadsheet and then ranked them all according to my own preferences. Given that the ranking is benefits and I had a column for cost, I did a B/C ratio on every last one of them. Don Q Anejo easily came out on top with best bang for the buck. The next best buys are Plantation 3-Star Artisinal, Plantation Original Dark Double Aged, and El Dorado 8.
