Hog Bay Needs an Update

I've been exploring (the rum) Hog Bay recently.  I bought a bottle a month ago, and have been lukewarm about it.  People keep talking it up and I realized there is some misinformation about it.

I feel like there is intentional misinformation and overly high ratings for Total Wine "Spirits Direct" products and suspect they hire people to fluff up scores.

Hog Bay says on the front that it is "Caribbean Black Rum", not from Barbados as listed here.

Around the bottle it keeps talking about Bermuda and Hog Bay (a region of Bermuda).  There's even a recipe for the Bermuda classic cocktail the 'Rum Swizzle' with a description how it is the classic island drink.  What's important is while that's true, the ‘Dark 'n' Stormy’ is better known outside of Bermuda.  Both are typically made with the Bermuda native Gosling's Black Seal rum... which Hog Bay strongly resembles.  Except the ‘Dark ‘n’ Stormy’ is trademarked and if you talk about making it with any other brand, you will get sued.

Here's the thing: Hog Bay, while named for Bermuda, and refers endless to the island, it is a blended rum from the Dominican Republic, Barbados and Guyana and is attempting to mimic Gosling's at a slightly lower price.

Yes, this is a good inexpensive rum.  I'm not sure it's worth the few dollars you save substituting it for Gosling's, but everyone has their own opinion.

Either way, it should be changed to "Multiple" for the location.  It’s not Barbados exclusive and definitely NOT from Bermuda.

Edit: Also, it's bottled by Infinity Spirits of Amsterdam.

Gibbs Hill is the wannabe Goslings - and trust me, it is not. To the best of my knowledge, there is no rum produced in Bermuda, but happy to be corrected if that is not the case.

TWM does not hire people to fluff ratings. Do employees possibly fluff? Maybe. Some Spirits Direct selections though (net necessarily rum, but across the board) are actually incredibly good. Certain well-known brands can also drift in and out of SD status as they work with TWM on deals and what not.
